“Two days after the training, I was able to put my new skills to use. A mother of a child with asthma asked me what she could do to make her child's asthma better. Now, instead of just telling her to quit smoking, I was able to tell her, "I can help you do this for your son and yourself." I gave her instructions and an Rx for NRT and the No Butts phone # to help walk her thru it. Took only 2 minutes!”

My 9 year old patient came in today for an asthma check and flu shot. Her dad has been a smoker since age 13. We've talked about smoking in the past and he was never ready to quit. Today, though, he asked me if I could help him quit smoking. Apparently his daughter has been "bugging" him about quitting, because she feels his smoking is exacerbating her asthma/allergies. But more importantly, she told me her dad has to quit because "I don't want him to die. I want him to live for 1,000 years!" He walked out the door with a prescription for the patch and gum, and we submitted a referral to the Smokers' Helpline.
