How CEASE Works

The CEASE program has 3 simple steps:

ASK: Put a system in place to ensure that exposure to secondhand smoke becomes one of the vital signs – ie the medical assistants ask “does the child live with anyone who smokes cigarettes?” at EVERY visit for EVERY patient

ASSIST: Provider prescribes nicotine replacement therapy (patch & gum/lozenge) to the parent using a simple and easy to use dosing guide available in the online training and on the website.

CONNECT: Provider connects the family to the CA Smokers’ Helpline where they can receive 6 free behavioral counseling sessions. If the provider sends in a referral to the Helpline, the Helpline will call the parent. Alternatively, the parent can call the Helpline themselves at 1-800-NO-BUTTS.
